International Diabetes & Cancer Research Consortium

In response to the increased attention surrounding the topic of glucose-lowering therapies and cancer outcomes in people with diabetes, the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) established a 4 million Euro research fund for diabetes and cancer for European-based investigators. Having identified a number of interested colleagues through the EFSD funding program, Dr. Johnson and colleagues in the UK (Edwin Gale) and Denmark (Bendix Carstensen) initiated an international research consortium for observational studies of diabetes and cancer.

A central aim of the consortium is to develop joint work programs and, where possible, to analyze data derived from different databases in parallel. As such, the consortium will enable discussions of consistent and optimal analytic approaches to various databases from around the world.

Dr. Jeff Johnson is a member of the Steering Committee, which organized an initial meeting in Copenhagen in June 2010 (http://staff.pubhealth.ku.dk/~bxc/DCRC). Carlo Marra, from UBC and Samantha Bowker, ACHORD Research Associate, also attended this first meeting in Copenhagen.

A second meeting for this international consortium, hosted by ACHORD, was held in Banff, Canada from March 8-9, 2011. We successfully obtained grant money from the Canadian Institute for Health Research Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes - Meetings, Planning, and Development, The European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Institute of Health Economics to host this meeting.

We also discussed analytic strategies and organizational plans for the DCRC. These discussions were lead by Bendix Carstensen, Jeff Johnson and Andrew Renehan.
